Date: Autumn 2017
Location: Legacy of the Plains Museum
Dozens of professional and student artists turn gourds into works of art for a special biennial show at Legacy of the Plains, held in odd years. Visitors can purchase $1 vote tickets to vote for their favorite gourds, and the art is auctioned off. Museum admission is free during the voting. All proceeds benefit the Legacy of the Plains Museum.
Gourd decoration is an ancient tradition in Africa and Asia as well as among the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Gourd art pieces may include ornaments, bowls, sculpture or vases and range in style from craft to fine art, using techniques including painting, carving, wood burning, dyeing or applique.
