Legacy of the Plains Museum will be hosting our American Stories: Celebrating 250 years event. The event is a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence and will be held on June 6th. All events are free and open to the public.
There will be presenters scheduled for the whole day that will tell stories and histories of the different cultures that contributed to the success of the valley. The presentations include Fred Nielsen discussing Abraham Lincoln, Karen Keehr from the Germans from Russia Museum talking about how they found success in Nebraska, and Jackie Guzman will discuss the history of the Mexican people in the panhandle.
A panel will discuss several quilts that are on loan from Japanese American Resource Center. The quilts highlight Japanese families’ journeys through their time in America, which includes the good and extreme hardship. The quilts showcase how families faced these hardships with Gaman, meaning perseverance, one stitch at a time.

Special Exhibits will be available from the museum’s collection, including a camel hair quilt and a driftwood spinning wheel from our Germans from Russia collection. The Rotating gallery will include a 42-star flag from the 1800s, several military uniforms and Quilts of Valor and a Lakota Star Quilt, which will be located in the lobby.
Quilts made in the Japanese American community, a special quilted chair, and quilts dedicated to those who perished during 9/11 on loan from the International Quilt Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be displayed from June 6, through July 19.
