In 2013-2014, Legacy of the Plains added more than 20,000 square feet for new permanent exhibits. Then in 2016, we developed state-of-the-art interactive exhibits to tell our stories in exciting new ways!
Inside of the museum, you’ll find that many of the artifacts you’ve always enjoyed are still on display. The Main Exhibit Hall consists of seven zones: “Prairie Pathways” which highlights the different modes of transportation from the prehistoric times to modern travel. “Grassland Empire” highlights the history of livestock and those who tend to them. “Beyond the Dust Bowl” explores dryland farming techniques, equipment – with a focus on wheat. “Just Add Water” explores irrigated farming equipment and how the fields get their water. Potatoes, sugar beets, beans and corn are also highlighted. “Taking Care of Business” highlights the businesses that made the North Platte Valley stand out. “Be it Ever so Humble…” highlights the different ethnicities that settled this region and the changes that occurred in their dwellings. “Eye of the Artist” showcases artwork from local artists through the generations.
The exhibits features interactive technologies and multimedia elements. They also tell overlooked chapters in western Nebraska’s history, offering a broader perspective than you can find anywhere else.

As of 2016, Legacy of the Plains completed the interactive, permanent Exhibit Hall. We’re raising money so we can maintain these exhibits and continue to grow on the grounds, which will continue to bring the stories of western Nebraska to life like you’ve never seen before.
Supporters and partners from throughout the community have made contributions to fund our new permanent exhibits.
